Ready for College?

If your child aspires to go to college, but he or she is experiencing continuing difficulties in school, it is never to early to seek help. Early detection and intervention are vital to the effective treatment of difficulties in academic functioning, including learning disabilities, cognitive processing problems and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In most instances, the longer these problems go untreated, the farther behind in school a student falls.

Educational assessments help determine the nature and extent of difficulties young people are experiencing in academic functioning. An educational assessment typically includes IQ testing, academic achievement testing, and testing for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or other processing problems. In addition, testing for specific learning disabilities is conducted if it is suggested by the results of the initial educational assessment.

For college-bound students who have ADHD or learning disabilities, educational assessments may also help determine whether they qualify for special accommodations on the SAT. Such accommodations can include time and one-half, double time (in special cases), and additional rest breaks while taking the SAT. (For more info about testing for special accommodations, see the link on this website under “Services” – “Testing Accommodations for the SAT.”)

If your child or adolescent is struggling in school but dreams of a bright future, an educational assessment can help him or her achieve that goal.
